Carroll overcomes early shutout from Jayettes

Struggling to get the ball into play at Carroll (20-10) on Monday, July 1, Perry (4-22) fell to the Tigers in a 10-0 shutout.

The last time the two had met, Carroll pushed by with a 12-3 win in Perry and nearly mirrored that performance on the Tigers home ground. Perry didn’t rest on its laurels though as Jayna Kenney blanked the Tigers the first inning with just one batter on base.

That was followed by a hitless inning for the Jayettes but another solid outing in the circle kept the game in check. Kenney struck out the first batter looking to keep her shutout alive. That was ultimately snapped as the Tigers snuck in one run before closing the inning.

Then everything broke down as Carroll would put up three consecutive 3-0 innings, to end the game on its own terms while Perry struggled to get on base to shake up the score.

Had the game lasted beyond the fifth, there could have been a sudden surge from the offense. The game wasn’t without its tries for heroics as Libby Hastings broke through leading off the fifth inning with the team’s first hit but couldn’t advance beyond second base as Perry looked to get back to the top of the order to home run leader Lydia Olejniczak. The rally came up short, keeping the Tigers in the driver seat, putting up the final three runs in four at-bats.

Perry stays on the road with a trip to Winterset (15-13) on Wednesday.
