Jayettes open up their basketball season with a home win

Perry’s basketball season got off on the right side of the record column with a convincing 55-25 win over the visiting Des Moines North Polar Bears (0-1).

In their home opener Friday, Nov. 17, the Jayettes (1-0) put up 18 points in the fourth while the defense allowed just a meager four.

Perry’s sophomore Molly Lutmer led all scorers with 21 points on 50 percent shooting (6-for-12) including finishing 5-for-8 on threes, a perfect 4-for-4 from the line with three steals and an assist.

Teammate, senior, Johanna Diw recorded 12 points (2-for-6 from the floor, 2-for-4 from three and made both her free throw attempts). She was second on the team in rebounds with five.

The home team put the game out of the reach in the second in a 17-9 second quarter.

Both teams stepped up their defensive presence in the third quarter as they combined for just nine total points - Jayettes six, Polar Bears three.

In the fourth the teams traded baskets before the Jayettes managed to slightly pull away outscoring their guests, 14-8.

Offensively the Jayettes shot 34.5 percent from the floor, 27.5 percent from beyond the arc, were 9-for-11 from the free throw line and pulled down eight offensive boards.

Defensively, the held their opponents to just 20 percent shooting, 23 percent from three, and recorded 12 steals.

Perry senior Grace Stewart led her squad with seven rebounds - three offensive and four defensive, as well as assists accounting for seven of the team’s 13.

The team heads to Newton on Nov. 21 to take on the Cardinals who stumbled out the gates with two straight losses in their first two games.
