Hegstrom’s six RBIs leads Jayettes past Lady Jays
The Perry Jayettes (20-11, 4-9) unleashed a barrage of runs as they earned a road conference win in a 10-0 rout against their rival the Bondurant-Farrar Lady Jays (5-4, 0-9).
Behind the bat of Victoria Hegstrom, the June 29 softball contest was over before it started when the Jayettes opened up the first with five runs against the home team.
Jayette Johanna Diw set the tone when she singled to start the inning and advanced to second after Sidney Vancil singled.
Alyssa Kruger’s single drove in Diw for the early 1-0 lead. Rachel Kinney followed with a single and starting pitcher Emma Olejniczak drove in Vancil and Kruger with a double.
Hegstrom got in on the action with a single that scored two of her team leading six RBIs.
On the mound, Olejniczak added to her career 750 strike-outs with 10 more in a six inning performance where she walked two and gave up only two hits.
In the fourth, Kinney connected for her second single that drove home Diw that extended the lead to 6-0.
A scoreless inning later Vancil’s smacked her second single to set up another multiple run inning.
After Kruger reached on an error and Vancil moved to second, Olejniczak’s single loaded the bases.
With the bases full Hegstrom belted a grand slam home run to put the visitors up by double digits and a chance to close out the game early.
Olejniczak shutdown the home team in the bottom half of the sixth for the victory, which snapped a two game conference losing streak.
Perry will look to make it two conference wins in a row when the Ballard Bombers fly into town on June 30.
