Perry alumni Frank Howell has recently accepted the new coaching endeavor as Graceland University’s new women’s head basketball coach.

“Ever since junior high I had always wanted to coach basketball at [a]college level,” Howell said. “Something about being surrounded by a college environment, especially a small town college, really appealed to me. I really am chasing after my dream”

For the past 13 years Howell ran the Cedar Rapids Washington girls basketball program. He’s led the team to winning seasons throughout his stellar career amassing a 224-83 record.

He admitted that the decision to move on wasn’t easy and he’s leaving behind a place he’s called home for over a decade.

“What I will miss the most about Cedar Rapids is the convenience of things,” he said. “It is a fabulous city.”

Howell added that he does appreciate the feeling of a smaller town, so each city has their trade off. There are so many choices for food and malls and you don’t have to go too far out, said the coach.

Howell was a familiar face in Perry as a student and athlete. In 1988 he led the Bluejays to a first place finish and a state title.

Currently, Howell is not thinking about the end goal of this career. He is focused on his immediate goals with Graceland University.

“I want to make this team the most competitive team in the heart of American’s Conference,” he said. “I want to make them go in the right direction. If I have to stay here for the rest of my life I will to get things done.”
