Hawks stay undefeated in conference after beating Panthers

The Woodward-Granger Hawks softball team (11-5, 8-0) continued their undefeated West Central Conference streak after defeating the Panorama Panthers(9-6, 5-5) in Thursday’s doubleheader.

A 2-0 lead became a two run deficit when the home Hawks allowed four runs in the top of the sixth and gave the Panthers a 4-2 advantage.

The Hawks battled back in the bottom half with two runs to tie the game at four.

After they held the Panthers scoreless, the Hawks rallied with a game winning run in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-4 victory.

Hawks pitcher Dalaney Bice earned the win tossing 6 1/3 innings and gave up no runs on three hits while striking-out five and walking two.

Riley Jamison came in relief allowing four runs-three earned, on three hits, walking and striking-out one.

Megan Bandstra and Kaycee Major led the team with three hits a piece and a combined two RBIs. Jamison drove in a game high two runs.

In game two, the road Hawks launched another comeback to complete the sweep in a 6-5 win.

The Panthers scored four runs in three innings while holding the Hawks scoreless through four. W-G’s offense finally countered in the next three innings with five runs and a 5-4 lead.

Another Panther run in the bottom of the sixth tied the game with a full inning left to play. A Hawks’ run in the seventh gave the them the 6-5 lead and the eventual win.

Jamison got the nod and lasted just two innings before handing the reigns over to Bice who got the win. They combined for six strike-outs, seven walks, and four earned runs off 11 hits.

Jamison, Bice, Bree Lesch and Maggi Mallon each contributed two hits. Bice and Lesch drove in two runs a piece.

The team will be back on the field on June 18, when they host the Phil Creese Classic.
