Errors play a role in Jayette loss

A couple of errors by the Perry Jayettes, ( 7-6, 2-5), allowed the ADM Tigers, (17-2, 7-1), a few extra unearned runs to claim the 5-2 victory.

On June 15, conference rivals the Jayettes and Tigers squared off in their final showdown this season.

Both teams failed to score in the first inning, with the visitors retiring three straight home batters.

In the second inning with one out, Perry’s starting pitcher Emma Olejniczak walked Shannan Jones who eventually advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt by ADM’s Montana Popp went awry.

Perry recovered with an out at the plate, when Jones attempted to score from third as Popp tried to distract Olejniczak who kept her eye on Jones.

The play at the plate gave Popp the opportunity to advance from first to third with two outs and an opportunity to score. A wild pitch later, Popp slid in for the score and the ADM 1-0 lead.

After the Jayettes next six batters were retired in order, the road team added another three runs- two unearned-which extended their lead to 4-0.

The home team made some noise in the bottom half of the fourth when Perry’s Johanna Diw reached first on a walk. Two outs later teammate Rachel Kinney smacked a double that brought Diw home.

Olejniczak followed with an RBI single to right field that brought in Kinney and cut the deficit to 4-2.

Unfortunately for the Jayettes, the team was unable to muster any more offense in the final three innings as the Tigers held the host scoreless.

Olejniczak received the loss. She gave up an earned run on two hits while walking six and striking out five. Maddy Jans contributed to the team’s three hits with a single.

On June 16, the Jayettes will head to Saydel to take on non-conference opponents the Eagles.
