Jayettes swimmers dive-in against two teams on Tuesday night

On Tuesday the Jayettes took the half- hour ride from Perry to Boone High School where the the team was primed to take on two opponents. Perry was ready and poised as they took to the water in 12 meets between the Toreadors and Algona Bulldogs.

As the events continued throughout the evening, the Jayettes competed at the highest level, never quitting or losing hope. At the end of the night Boone topped both Perry and Algona with scores of 80-20 and 81-20.

The competition was stiffer against the Algona Bulldogs as the Jayettes were edged out by only 13 points in a close 53-40 contest despite being underwhelmed three to one.

The final score doesn’t always tell the underlining story. For the Jayettes this competition showed a lot more than the end result.

Head coach Jean Dowd couldn’t be happier with her team and all they accomplished. She saw a team that was progressively getting better.

“Several swimmers saw season best and personal best times tonight in individual events,” she said.

The 200-yard freestyle saw sophomore Breanna Penenger post a personal best time of 2:22:88, while senior Haileigh Kenyon had a season best of 2:20:44, which earned her first place against Algona. In the 200 individual medley, junior Haley Vaughn finished in second place against Boone but managed to snag first place versus the Bulldogs.

There were several outstanding performances from freshman Ana Ridnour and sophomore Breanna Ackerman. Ridnour had two personal best times in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke. Her time competing in the 50 was 33.04, and in the 100 she posted a time of 1:35:75. Ackerman had a personal best time of 1:22:29 in the junior varsity 100-yard freestyle.

For coach Dowd, these personal best times are an indication that the team is heading in the right direction.

“In addition to helping the team tonight, those time drops will help with lane placement for our entry times at the Ames Invite this weekend,” she said.

The Jayettes will hit the pool this week and prepare for the upcoming weekend event.

“The team now prepares for the Ames Little Cyclone Invitational in an 8-team field on Saturday, September 12,” she said.
