Bluejays run to another Invitational

On Tuesday, September 8, the Perry High School cross-country team headed about 40 miles south to compete at this year’s Winterset Invitational.

The field was crowded with over 10 teams competing per event. The Jayettes went first; followed by the Bluejays who were the girls’ biggest supporters.

The girls’ team had seven competitors participating at the invitational. Six out of the seven girls posted times under 40 minutes.

Perry sophomore Grace Stewart came in 25th place out of 162 competitors that crossed the finish line with a posted time. Stewart, who did well at this year’s Gilbert Invitational, had another strong showing as she crossed the finish line with a time of 24 minutes.

Other notable Jayettes runners were junior McKinley Thompson; sophomore Darian McCord and freshman Jacky Castaneda who all posted times under 35 minutes. Thompson finished in 98th place with a time of 29.28; McCord finished in 118th place with a time of 31.09; and Castaneda came in 123rd place with a 31.22 time.

As the Bluejays made its way to the starting line, it was now the Jayettes supporting the team. The boys team had a total of 12 finishers in a field of 227 athletes that posted times. Seniors Dawit Adum and Morgan Holstrom both finished in the top 100 with Adum posting a time of 19.38, and Holstrom [posting a time a little over 20 minutes at 20.13.

The team will travel on Monday, September 14, to Ballard to take part in the Ballard Invitational. The race starts at 4:45 p.m.
