WOODWARD-GRANGER (4-3, 3-2) at WOODWARD ACADEMY (0-7, 0-5)
LAST MEETING — Woodward-Granger allowed just 161 rushing yards (80 of which came on the lone Knight score of the game) and only 15 yards through the air in shutting down the Woodward Academy, 42-6. The Hawks ran for 313 yards and two scores, threw for 64 yards and two scores and scored twice on special teams in rolling to the win. The teams have a sharing agreement at Hawk stadium, and this year the rotation will have the Hawks act as the visiting team and using the east side benches and bleachers.
ABOUT THE HAWKS — Defeating the Knights would all but seal at least a third-place finish in Class A District 7 for W-G. Quarterback Cole Ashman is 47-79-4 for 779 yards and five touchdowns through the air. He has added 113 yards on 30 carries as well. Marshall Nieland has 1,043 yards and 10 TDs on 162 carries, with Dylan Garland (46-338, 3 TDs) and Michael Connor (47-263, 7 TDs) also big parts of the ground game. Race Brant (15-107) gives the Hawks five rushers with at least 100 yards on the season. Nieland leads the receiving corps with 279 yards on 17 catches, but Tanner Canova has all five of the aerial TDs, which have come on 11 snags for 241 yards. Brant has 12 catches for 173 yards as the only other Hawk in triple-digits for receiving yardage. The defense has intercepted 12 passes and retrieved four fumbles, one of which was returned for a score. Connor is the top stopper with 70 tackles, with Dylan Nixon adding 65 denials.
ABOUT THE KNIGHTS — (All Woodward Academy stats are official through five games — they had not reported from a 27-0 loss to Audubon last week as of press time). LaDorian Hale is 27-55-3 for 444 yards and five TDs passing, with Victor Fuller 10-20-1 for 11 yards and one score. Speedy Darius Scott-Crayton had five TD catches and 352 yards on 16 receptions, an average of 22 yards per catch whie Jamal Coleman (86-402, 2 TDs) and Avvion Caldwell (33-115, 1 TD) lead the rushing game for the Knights. Brady Claman’s 53 tackles is a team-high, with Reshaun Mcgee adding 38 tackles, Calvin Luckett 33 stops and Caldwell 32. The team has forced seven turnovers, recovering six fumbles and snaring an interception. Mcgee had an 80 yard kick return for a score and averages 27.4 yards on his 10 other kick returns while averaging 24.7 yards on three punt returns.
