Perry XC boys win at Story City
STORY CITY — Bluejay runners finished first, ninth, 10th, 11th and 23rd to send the Class 3A No. 14 Perry boys to the championship of the Roland-Story Invitational Sept. 26.
Perry junior Atem Akok proved his No. 8 ranking in 3A is no fluke by winning the event in 16 minutes, 35.45 seconds. Teammates Keegan Pfau (18:20.21), Oscar Chavez (18:23.15) and Christian Morales (18:25.12) placed 9-10-11, with Cole Chance (19:02.85) as Perry bested Nevada, 54-64, for the team title.
Saydel was third with 97 points, with Bondurant-Farrar (131), South Hamilton (145), Ogden (187), Roland-Story (191), the Gilbert JV (202), Greene County (228), Woodward Academy (248), Colo-NESCO (267), WCV (281) and Madrid (336) also in the field.
Also running for the Bluejay varsity were Zach Roberts (19:45.31) and Luis Gonzalez (22:01.88).
The Jayettes finished ninth in an 11-team girls field. South Hamilton (40), Greene County (62) and Roland-Story (84) claimed the top three spots, with Nevada (101), WCV (123), B-F (145), Madrid (177), Saydel (197), Perry (244), the Gilbert JV (263) and Colo-NESCO (304) also in action.
Leah Reuter (34th, 18:10.18), was the first Jayette to finish, with Jessie Laughridge (44th, 18:55.4), Aurora Rodriguez (50th, 19:30.72), Ashley McCord (58th, 19:53.55) and Taylor Lathrum(59th, 20:02.84) also scoring for the Perry girls. Louise Peitz (21:06.49) and Kyla Devilbliss (25:15.3) also ran for the varsity.
The Bluejays were fourth in a six-team boys junior varsity race.
Richie Cazares was fourth in 19:54.15 to pace Perry, with Steven Guardado (10th, 21:08.39), Gerardo Gonzalez (19th, 21:53.32), Fernando Catalan (26th, 23:05.15) and Ian Velasco (33rd, 23:58.08) also scoring. Bladamir Roldan (23:58.94) and Seth Talbot (24:02.03) also made the circuit for the Perry JV.
Perry had only two entries in the two-mile boys middle school race but both placed well. Zach Thompson was third overall in 12:20.99, with Mario Cruz 22nd in 13:29.67.
Freshmen Jessica Kelton and Chloe Anderson were the lone Perry entrants in the girls JV contest, with the former crossing in 29:29.92 and the latter a step behind in 29:30.19. The race was won by W-G junior Josie Baumgartner, formerly of Perry, in 19:33.34. She was running for Madrid as part of a sharing agreement between the schools.
Grace Stewart placed seventh in the girls middle school race in 14:06.26, with Hannah Roberts 59th in 17:57 and Delaney Eiteman 80th in 19:24.3.
