Update: Authorities identify 7-year-old who was struck and killed in Woodward-Granger High School parking lot
A 7-year-old boy struck and killed by an SUV in the Woodward-Granger High School parking lot Monday has been identified.
Charlie Brewer, of Bouton, was hit at 3:42 p.m. Monday when he ran in front of a 2019 GMC Denali, according to the Iowa State Patrol and Dallas County Sheriff's Office.
Chief Deputy Adam Infante said the preliminary investigation showed there was no intent by the 47-year-old driver from Perry to strike the child. No charges have been filed.
The Iowa State Patrol will make the final charging decision, but it is not likely the driver will be charged, Infante said. The crash happened closer to the middle school, Infante said. He did not know why the child was at the high school at the time of the crash.
Matt Adams, Woodward-Granger Community School District superintendent, said in letter obtained by the Perry News that the district was heartbroken by the death of the student.
"This death is sure to raise emotions, concerns, and questions for our school district and especially our students," Adams said in the letter. "If there is anything we can do to support your student, please let us know."
Grief counselors are being made available to students, according to the letter.
