Al Welsh Orchestra to kick off Perry Fine Arts season on Oct. 14

Perry Fine Arts will be sponsoring the Al Welsh Orchestra in a program of “Big Band” music as they perform at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, in Perry High School’s Performing Arts Center, 1200 18th St.

The Al Welsh Orchestra plays music of the big band era, along with many of the most famous dance tunes of the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond. They play the music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Woody Hermann, Benny Goodman as well as music of the most popular dance bands such as Lawrence Welk, Guy Lombardo, Sammy Kaye and many others.

Since the mid-1950s, the Al Welsh Orchestra, based in the state of Iowa, has entertained thousands of people annually, playing for many different occasions. Just as in decades past, the orchestra continues on to this day, playing ballrooms, town celebrations, wedding receptions, birthday and anniversary parties and dedications, among other venues. The Al Welsh Orchestra has been a regular participant at Perry’s July 4th celebrations for a number of years. Orchestra members from the Perry area include Steve Cook, former Perry High School band director and Marlene Radebaugh of Rippey.

Perry Fine Arts concerts are free, though donations are accepted, and open to all. The Performing Arts Center is handicapped accessible.
