The Perry Elementary School snack program received a big boost when Perry Elks Lodge No. 407 donated $1,888 on Friday, July 20, 2018.

“One of our members attended a city council meeting on March 5 and heard of an opportunity for us to help out,” said Dave Davis, Exalted Ruler.

Initially it was thought that the funds would go toward the lunch milk program but it was found that the money would go further if it was applied to the milk portion of the snack program.

Megan Maylum, School Community Liaison for Perry Community Schools, said, “Our normal snack price funding is going down and since teachers often buy snacks for their classrooms themselves, this donation will really help us help them.”

Maylum was excited for the donation and said it will be a great benefit to the children at the elementary school.

The Perry Elks Lodge can apply for and receive grants from the national Elks organization for community and Veteran contributions. This donation was part of a grant they received for a couple different projects.

“This is just one of many contributions our lodge makes throughout the year,” Davis said. “We are extremely proud to be part of the Perry community and it’s a small way of showing how much we care about the community.”

Davis added that the Elks recently finished the semi-annual ditch cleanup. The group also helped the American Legion raise funds on the Fourth of July. Those funds, Davis said, will help the American Legion bring its building back to life.

The Elks work on those types of projects all year.
