The Perry Chief added an intern to their staff for the summer.
Ashley Long, the newspaper’s intern, will cover various events throughout the community and take sports photos. Long just graduated from Johnston High School.
“This is my first time having an internship so I am a bit nervous,” Long said. “However, I am also excited to see what the Perry Chief has to teach me and I am ready to head it on.”
Specializing in photography, Long said she found her love for it when she bought her own little camera after joining her middle school yearbook team. After working on photography throughout her high school yearbook career, she achieved the position of photo editor her senior year, she said.
“Capturing people’s lives through a camera lens is something I was always drawn to,” she said. “Once I found myself getting lost in the moment and enjoying every event I photographed, I realized I had found my passion and what I wanted to do as a future career.”
She has covered events from sports to fairs to protests, Long fell in love with the excitement of meeting new people and experiencing different events.
It helped develop her passion for travel and journalism, she added.
By working as an intern for the paper, Long hopes to bring her journalism skill to a new level. “Not only will this experience get me prepared for what I want to do in my future, but I will get to meet so many new people,” she said. “I want to absorb as much knowledge as I can from the professional staff and participate in events I would have never known of if I never went out of my comfort zone.”
After her time at the Perry Chief Long will attend Des Moines Area Community College to pursue a communications studies degree.
