Smoke test slated for Sept. 29

Stephanie Ivankovich

The City of Perry will be conducting a smoke test of the sanitary sewer system in the area of Willis Avenue to Pattee Street from Seventh Street to Eleventh Street on Tuesday, September 29th, weather permitting.

The rain date will be Wednesday, September 30th.

A “smoke test” survey will assist the inspection crews in locating breaks and defects in the sewer system. The smoke people will see coming from the vent stacks on houses or holes in the ground is non-toxic, non-staining, has no odor, white to gray in color and creates no fire hazard.

The smoke should not enter the home unless it has defective plumbing or dried up drain traps. It is advisable for the home owner to pour a gallon of water into each floor drain prior to the testing. If smoke enters the house there is good reason to assume that dangerous sewer gases may also be entering inside home or business. A person should evacuate immediately and notify the work crews. If someone is not home and discovers smoke upon return, it is advised to call the City of Perry at 515-465-2481.

If there is any individual in the home or business who has respiratory problems and is immobile, please notify the city at 515-465-2481 prior to testing.
