JEWELL — Woodward-Granger advanced to the Class 2A Region 5 Semifinals with a 3-0 sweep of host South Hamilton Tuesday. The win sets up a semifinal showdown against fifth-ranked South Central Calhoun (37-4) in Lake City tonight. The winner advances to the Region 5 Final in Webster City Wednesday.

W-G (24-15) won behind scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-15. The visiting Hawks trailed, 23-20, in the first game before Mary Hansen served five straight points — the final two on ace serves — to steal the win for the guests. They went on to close out the match with little trouble in the remaining two contests.

"It took us a while to get going in the front row, but we passed well and had good serve-receive the whole night," W-G head coach Meg Jackson. "We served well and kept them from running their system. We did not have a lot of digs tonight, and that points to how well we were serving because they (South Hamilton, who finishes 12-15) could not run their offense."

Abby Musser had 12 kills, Olivia McCune eight kills, Hansen six and Dalaney Bice and Bree Lesch three each for W-G. Maggie Bermel had 12 assists and Hansen 11, with Musser making eight digs, Lesch six, Tori Manning five and McCune three.

Lesch was 18-of-20 with four aces serving, with Hansen 15-17-5. McCune was 10-10-1 and Manning 8-9-1, with Musser 12-of-12 behind the line.

Abby Hansen had two blocks at the net, with Cailin Coker, Bice and McCune also adding blocks.

Jackson said she knows her team will have to play at their best against a stout Titans squad.

"We are going to have to speed up our game and maybe allow our servers to serve a little tougher and risk some mistakes to get them out of their system," she explained. "They are going to run a quick offense and we will have to try and match it."
