Lining up with 23 other class 1A schools and 299 total runners Thursday, Oct. 24 in Marshalltown for the state cross country qualifying meet, Woodward-Granger’s season came to an unceremonious ending.
Only the top 15 runners from each of the boys and girls brackets would advance to next weekend’s state meet in Fort Dodge. Hawks senior Dylan Steele was the closest W-G had to a representative. He closed in on a time of 18 minutes 26 seconds, good for 23rd place. Steele was 32 seconds behind the qualifying quota.
Freshman Carsten Wright (19:02) stayed close behind at 39th overall followed by Alex Bice (19:22) in 53rd and Jack Grell (19:36) in 61st place. W-G had three more runners between Caleb Jones (19:59), Xavier Ibarra (20:31) and Kaya Bowlsby (20:43) place between places 60-90, leaving nearly half of the field behind them.
The girls bracket didn’t leave as much room for Hawks, as sophomores Katie Grell (25:35) and Kaitlyn Smith (25:44) held onto 90th and 92nd overall respectively among the 137 girls in line. Senior Natalie Helbling (25:50) at 97th didn’t trail far behind the sophomore duo. Of the 20 final finishers, four were Hawks runners.
