Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict that shifted Perry’s cross country meet to the same day as the swim team’s meet Tuesday, Oct. 8 in Grinnell, the Jayettes were down a swimmer.
Jaylene Karolus was absent again competing at the Leon Fox Invitational home cross country meet.
Taking on the host Tigers and Williamsburg in a triple-duo meet, Perry swimming fell in 71-20 and 67-31 decisions respectively.
Though Grinnell or Williamsburg took top prize in every event, Perry made up its points by staying between the two in a number of races including the 400 yard freestyle relay. With Avery Miner, Hailey Meacham, Gracie Phillips, and Sarah Vaughn, the group clocked at 4 minutes 49.78 seconds. That fell behind Williamsburg by 16 seconds but bested Grinnell’s group by four seconds to grab a win.
The opposite was true for Phillips in her individual 100 backstroke (1:18.55). She fell behind two Williamsburg waves but topped the Grinnell competition. Vaughn had a similar leg up on her competition en route to a personal record in the 500 free (6:17.61) a week after finishing first in Perry’s home meet. She also dropped a second from her 200 IM (2:44.61) for her other individual event of the day.
Phillips, Vaughn, and Miner were also joined by Amanda Holwegner in the 200 medley relay (2:25.31) to place third overall among the two group spread from each school.
The Jayettes next splash in their home water Tuesday, Oct. 15.
