MAXWELL — Collins-Maxwell had a tough time handling Woodward-Granger’s pressure in an 86-32 non-conference loss to the Hawks Friday in Maxwell.

Collins-Maxwell (5-14) committed several turnovers against Woodward-Granger’s press, most coming around half court against aggressive Hawk trapping. After making a stop in its half-court defense, Woodward-Granger also got several run outs for easy baskets on the break.

The Hawks broke the game open in the second quarter, building a 51-20 lead at the break. They continued to cruise in the third quarter to improve their record to 16-4 on the season.

“They’re a good (Class) 2A basketball team,” Collins-Maxwell head boys’ basketball coach Wes Stover said. “They are very aggressive. You can be when you’ve got 12 very solid basketball players — they’re not going to be worried about fouls.”

Stover said his team got in a funk after a strong start to the week. The Spartans were competitive in a 69-53 loss at North Tama on Monday and they defeated Waterloo Christian on Tuesday, 55-48.

“We’re Jekyll and Hyde,” Stover said. “Some nights we’re on fire and play really good basketball, like we did Monday night up at Traer when we played some of the best basketball we’ve played all season. Then we just fall apart and play very uninspired.

Mason Markley’s outside shooting kept Collins-Maxwell in the game for a little while. He did all of his scoring in the first quarter and the early stages of the second — scoring his team’s first 14 points after hitting four 3-pointers.

“The last couple of weeks he’s finally been able to knock down those shots,” Stover said. “We’ve kind of been running some stuff to open that up for him a little bit more. He came out hot and then went cool.”

John Kasper added seven points, Brett Livesay and Kadin Bennett four apiece and Daniel Klein chipped in three points for the Spartans. Livesay also had eight rebounds and two blocks.

Bryce Achenbach netted a game-high 25 points and added six steals for Woodward-Granger. Noah Hoyt chipped in 20 for the Hawks, who improved to 16-4.
