It’s always a great feeling for any sporting coach to see a number of familiar faces returning for another year of competition.
The awareness between any coach and their players, coupled with the familiarity an athlete has with a specific arena, team or golf course, makes for a possible successful season.
This is the exact feeling that Perry Jayettes head golf coach, Joel Happel, has when it comes to the start of his squad’s 2017-2018 year.
“I feel good going into the season,” Happel said. “ We have a good returning group and some good additions to the team.”
Back into the mix and looking to close out her final Jayette season strong, is senior Alyssa Kruger. Last season the veteran golfer earned both all conference and all district.
Happel will look to her and a handful of other seniors, like Skylar Cunningham, and Hannah Roberts to set the pace and guide the younger players.
The trio, according to the head coach, look ready to have a great season.
Also taking another swing with the team is junior Delaney Eiteman, who Happel feels has worked hard on her game and will be pushing for the top spot.
Rounding out the roster, which at the moment has an open spot, is sophomore Molly Lutmer who will also lend her time to Perry’s soccer program.
“She will definitely be a big help for the team,” Happel said.
Happel’s empty varsity spot should be filled at any moment since he has seen a number of girls interested in trying out.
Despite the missing final piece, the head coach envisions a strong squad who are capable of making some noise at the end of the season.
“By the end of the year we should get our sixth spot solidified, and I would like us to be competing to win the conference and qualify for state,” he said.
