In total nine Bluejays guided by head coach Mark Weber, made the Jan. 6, trek to Ames for a tough day of competition.
Second place honors went to senior Zachary Thompson (120) and sophomore Kaleb Olejniczak (126) who continue to mark wins under their belts. Senior Zach Stewart (138) recorded a third place finish.
Fourth ranked Thompson recorded his first victory when he earned a 16-1 technical fall win over Iowa City High’s Khurt Bacho. In the semifinals he need 60 seconds into the second period to pin Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Ty Pfiffner.
He went toe-to-toe in his first place match versus Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Conrad Braswell as the two wrestlers fought to the finish with Braswell winning an 8-3 decision.
Third ranked Olejniczak almost followed Thompson’s exact path. After a first round bye he recorded an 18-3 TF win over West Des Moines Valley’s Noah Micka.
It was an all out grudge match versus Omaha Skutt Catholic’s Nicholas Stoltenberg in his semifinals match. The two grapplers used all the allotted time with Olejniczak winning the match 4-3 in Tiebreaker-1.
On to the first place match versus Pocahontas Area’s Shea Ruffridge who managed to beat out the Bluejay with a close 4-3 decision.
Rounding out the final place finisher was fourth rated Stewart who first earned a pinfall victory over Ames’ Carson Wright and then won a 12-4 Major Decision versus Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ Reed Abbas.
In the semifinals Stewart took a 3-1 decision loss to Ballard’s Jarrett Miller before earning his own 5-1 decision victory over Boone’s James Runestad in round three of consolation matches.
