The Woodward-Granger Hawks’ wrestling team nabbed the conference prize last Saturday when they won the West Central Activities Conference tournament in Casey, Iowa.
At AC/GC junior High School on Dec. 16, the Hawks dominated the competition and finished with a 4-1 record which earned them the top prize.
The Hawks recorded victories of 67-9 against the AC/GC Chargers, 60-12 versus the Ogden Bulldogs, 48-12 against the Panorama Panther, and 48-27 versus the West Central Valley Stuart Wildcats.
In their win versus the host the Hawks’ total points came from five pinfalls, a major decision, one decision and five forfeits.
W-G’s Payton Tague (126), Cale Pritchett (170), Cody Fisher (195), and Hunter Pierce (106) were responsible for 30 points, The remaining seven came from a Ryan Munoz (120) 12-3 MD win and a Jay Dorenkamp (138) 6-2 decision victory.
The Hawks recorded nine six point victories - eight pinfalls - a MD and a decision versus the Bulldogs.
Tague, Colt Palmer (132), Cole Carman (145), Austin Scharlau (152), Gabe Yingst (160), Dillon Fogarty (285), Pierce, and Dilynn Lewiston (113) all earned the six point wins.
Fisher won another match this time with a 13-5 MD and Tyler Lawrenson (220) followed with a 6-2 decision.
Against the Panthers, Pierce, Munoz, Yingst, Lawrenson, and Fogarty all tallied pinfalls. Scharlau recorded a 6-2 decision and Palmer won an 11-9 sudden victory.
The Hawks fourth win of the tournament was against the Wildcats who allowed the Hawks six pinfall wins, two decisions and one forfeit.
After a Panthers’ forfeit, Munoz, Palmer, Carman, Yingst, Fisher and Lawrenson put together a string of six point victories while in the process Pritchett and Pierce added two decision wins a piece.
The only loss of the day for the Hawks came in a close 37-30 matchup versus Van Meter/Earlham as the former finished with three pinfall wins.
The trio of Palmer, Yingst and Fogarty were responsible for the 18 points with the other 12 coming in forfeits.
