On Monday, Aug. 19, 2019, Perry Elks Lodge No. 407 dropped off 60 backpacks filled with a complete school supply list in each to the P.A.C.E.S. program at Perry Elementary School.

The lodge recently applied for and received a $2,500 Beacon grant from the Elks National Foundation. According to Loyal Knight Amber Green, helping the community is a positive for the lodge. Green and Chaplain Eric Derry spearheaded the donation from start to finish.

The donation consisted of 20 girl and boy backpacks for each 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Mary Hillman, director of the P.A.C.E.S. program said, “This is like Christmas,” as the Elks volunteers carried the backpacks into the school. Green said, “the reaction received from PA.C.E.S. was humbling.”

Hillman explained that there is always a need for donated school supplies and she really appreciates the help of the community. This particular donation was a big one for the program.

“The lodge couldn’t be happier to provide for those that may need a little assistance,” Green said.

The lodge partnered with Andrea Tunink from Ben’s Five and Dive for the backpacks.
