Calvin Sass, of Perry, has been chosen by American Legion Post 85 to attend the annual session of the Iowa Hawkeye Boys State to be held June 9-14, 2019, at Camp Dodge near Johnston. Sass is the son of Joshua and Betsy Sass.

He is one of approximately 700 young men attending Iowa Hawkeye Boys State who have completed their junior year of high school and will study city, county and state government and administer them according to the laws of Iowa. The boys also participate in legislative sessions, campaigning, party rallies, debating and voting, along with learning a deeper knowledge of parliamentary procedure.

In addition to their political activities, the boys hear several motivational speakers, along with local and state government officials. The culmination of the week is on Friday, June 14, with the final General Assembly, when awards and scholarships are announced.

Sass attends Perry High School and is involved in the following activities and studies: Algebra II, Chemistry, U.S. History, English III and Spanish I. He is involved in track, cross country and choir. He enjoys singing, drawing, design and physical fitness. He plans a career in medical engineering.

He was chosen to attend Iowa Hawkeye Boys State on the basis of interest, leadership and scholastic qualities. Iowa Hawkeye Boys State is sponsored by the Iowa Department of the American Legion. Iowa Hawkeye Boys State Delegates will be supervised by Commissioners of Iowa Boys State and the Iowa Highway Patrol, agencies of Iowa government, the Iowa National Guard, the U.S. Military Services and Military Academies, professional career fields (lawyers, college admission counselors and teachers) and former American Legion Boys State delegates.
