Perry’s Katelyn Whelchel participated in the Triple Crown East Coast Nationals in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Aug. 1-4. Whelchel plays second base for the Iowa Blitz Gold softball team, which is based in Altoona and coached by Joe Carter.
The Blitz Gold was undefeated in both pool and bracket play, defeating Florida Fuson, 6-0, New York Rally, 8-1, New York Dirt Devils, 8-0, and the Miami Lady Canes, 3-1. They knocked off Pennsylvania Extreme, 5-2, Charlotte Stars, 9-5 and the Kentucky Dream Team, 7-1. The Blitz Gold then fell twice to the Dream Team in the Championship Series to finish second in the Gold bracket, which featured 42 teams from 11 different states.
The daughter of Jeremy and Janelle Whelchel of Perry, Katelyn will have a busy junior year as she will spend many weekends and some free time over the next nine months with her Blitz team traveling to college showcases in Illinois, Missouri, Florida, Indiana, Kansas and Iowa.
Whelchel plays shortstop for the Jayettes and head coach Tina Kenney. She hit .267 this summer with seven doubles and a home run while driving in 12 runs and scoring 11 times.
