GRINNELL — Perry overcame a 13-point deficit to rally past Grinnell for an 86-76 win in their girls swimming dual Tuesday.
"The team responded well to roster changes and the long road trip," a pleased veteran Jayette head coach Jean Dowd said. "IT was great to see this hard-working group of girls be successful."
Perry faced the 13-point hole after the diving portion of the meet as the Jayettes do not have a diving team.
The Jayettes slowly battled back to take the win, fueled by victories in all three relays and in five of the eight individual events. Perry finished 1-2 in the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke to pile up extra points and turn the tide.
Serenity Ewing, Shaleah Ewing, Taylor Wieland and Haileigh Kenyon won the 200 medley relay in 2 minutes, 11.95 seconds, with the Ewing sisters, Kenyon and Haley Vaughn winning the 200 free relay in 1:55.03.
A 1-2 finish in the 100 breaststroke from Vaughn (1:25.33) and Hailee Dencklau (1:27.48) all but assured victory, which was cemented when Wieland, Dencklau, Vaughn and Lourdes Marquez won the 400 free relay in 4:53.29.
Shaleah Ewing and Kenyon were 1-2 in the 100 buttefly in 1:12.51 and 1:18.97, respectively, with Kenyon and Serenity Ewing 1-2 in the 50 free in 27.79 and 29.39.
Marquez won the 500 free for the first time with an effort of 7:05.57, with Shaleah Ewing first (2:35.49) and Wieland third (2:47.18) in the 200 individual medley.
Vaughn and Wieland placed 2-3 in the 100 free with clockings of 1:07.77 and 1:09.91, with Dencklau second in the 200 free in 2:36.96 while Serenity Ewing touched second in the 100 backstroke in 1:14.99.
The Jayettes also received key points from senior Shannon Hellyer, who scored in both the 50 free (52.86) and 100 free (2:06.36) that helped aid the winning cause.
Perry returns to action Tuesday when they host Boone and Algona for a double-dual at the MCB pool. The meet will begin at 6:30 p.m. Due to construction work in the MCB parking lot, those attending the meet are asked to park along Pattee Street if possible.
