HUXLEY — The Perry boys had four harriers earn All-Raccoon River Conference status to help lift the Bluejays to second place at the RRC meet Monday.
Boone, led by Class 3A’s top two runners, was an easy winner with 28 points. Perry was second at 74 and Carlisle third at 87, with Ballard (88), ADM (128), Winterset (135) and Bondurant-Farrar (149) completing the field. Carroll does not compete in cross country.
Toreador standouts Albert Meier and Chandler Austin claimed the top two spots, in 16 minutes, 23 seconds and 16:24, respectively, with Perry’s Atem Akok third overall in a personal-best effort of 16:28.
Keegan Pfau was seventh in 17:46, Christian Morales 13th in 18:18 and Oscar Chavez 18th in 18:23 for the Jays. All earned All-RRC honors by placing in the top 20. Perry also scored the 33rd place finish of Richie Cazares (19:18), with Cole Chance (40th, 19:40) and Zach Roberts (41st, 19:44) not having their scores used for the team total.
Winterset edged Boone, 40-45, for girls team honors. Ballard was third with 68 points, with Carlisle (113), B-F (122), ADM (132) and Perry (194) completing the field.
Ballard’s Abby Kohut-Jackson won the girls individual title in 15:13, with Boone’s Dianna Slight second in 15:44 and ADM’s Brianna Mueller third in 15:52.
Leah Reuter was the first Jayette to finish, crossing 27th in 18:15. Jessie Laughridge was 38th in 19:07 and Ashley McCord 39th in 19:23, with Taylor Lathrum 43rd in 19:45 and Louise Peitz 47th in 20:52. The Jayettes had only five runners — seven are allowed — running in the varsity race.
The Perry junior varisty boys were fifth in their race with 130 points, with Ballard running past Boone, 42-57, for the top spot.
David Cardenas (18th, 21:06), Gustav Winterberg (19th, 21:09), Steven Guardado (25th, 21:21), Gerardo Gonzalez (30th, 21:47) and Ian Velasco (38th, 22:50) scored for the Perry JV. Brody Kimrey (43rd, 23:49) and Bladimir Roldan (46th, 24:04) also made the circuit for Perry.
Chloe Anderson (34th, 24:36) and Kyla Devilbliss (35th, 24:51) were the only two harriers who competed for Perry in the girls junior varsity race.
The Bluejay middle school team had just three runners, with Zach Thompson placing fourth overall in 12:29 to lead the way. Mario Cruz was 14th in 13:19 and Isael Morales 46th in 14:49 on the two-mile middle school course. Cruz is in grade 7, with Thompson and Morales in grade 8.
Five teams had enough runners to post team scores in the girls middle school event, with Ballard winning on a score of 21 points. ADM was second at 57, Winterset third at 86, Perry fourth at 106 and Boone fifth at 112.
Grace Stewart was fourth overall for the Jayettes in 13:49, with Elise Hill (21st, 15:39), Hannah Roberts (24th, 15:57), Delaney Eiteman (28th, 16:41) and Skylar Cunningham (29th, 16:42) also scoring. Nailea Marquez (34th, 21:55) also made the rounds for the Jayettes. Eiteman is a seventh grader, the others are all in grade 8.
