Veteran head coach Mike Long will soon reach an impressive career milestone, as he will coach his 1,000th game, all as skipper of the Bluejays. He is one of only a handful of head coaches to reach 1,000 games at the same school.

Long came to Perry in 1978 and is in his 36th year at the helm of the Jays, who he has taken to six state tournaments. The Jays have finished as state runner-up in three of those tournaments.

Perry had games slated at Winterset July 10 and with Kuemper Catholic July 11 before a visit to Boone Saturday. If the weather holds, Monday’s game at Pella will be his 1,000th.

The Bluejays end their regular season at Gilbert Tuesday and will open postseason play with a District 13 semifinal at ADM next Friday.

Currently ninth on the career win list among active coaches in Iowa, Long is a combined 653-343 (.656) after a 6-0 loss to DC-G Tuesday.
