DES MOINES — The Perry girls swim team participated in the annual Polar Bear Invitational at Des Moines North Sept. 28.

Des Moines Hoover won the invite with 219 points, with Storm Lake second at 179.5. DM North edged Perry, 159-157.5, for third place, with Algona finishing fifth with 128 team points.

A highlight for Perry came in the 50 freestyle when Haileigh Kenyon finished third in 26.82 seconds and Serenity Ewing sixth in 29.37. DM North’s Moriah Ross won the race in 25.74, with Storm Lake’s Keely Soellner second in 26.04, with both joined by Kenyon in the record books as all three bested the meet standard of 27.01 in the event, set in 2012 by Perry’s Laura Finneseth. Kenyon had touched in 27.62 last season.

Kenyon was second in the 100 free in 60.4 seconds, with Hailee Dencklau sixth in1 minute, 9.68 seconds. Perry also placed twice in the 200 IM, when Shaleah Ewing was third in 2:35.82 and Haley Vaughn fourth in 2:41.1, and also in the 100 breaststroke, in which Vaughn was fourth in 1:23.85 and Taylor Wieland sixth in 1:25.3.

Serenity Ewing was third in the 100 backstroke (1:13.73), Shaleah Ewing fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:11.79), and Dencklau fifth in the 200 free (2:33.39) with Wieland fifth in the 500 free (6:58.97).

Kenyon and Vaughn teamed with the Ewing sisters to place third in the 200 free relay in 1:53.36, with Kenyon, Wieland and the Ewings fourth in the medley relay in 2:11.73 while Dencklau, Vaughn, Wieland and Lourdes Marquez placed fourth in the 400 free relay in 4:39.5.
