URBANDALE — Woodward-Granger’s softball season ended July 10 at the hands of Des Moines Christian, who posted a 12-1 win in five innings over the Hawks in their Class 2A Region 7 Semifinal contest.
DMC swept the regular season series over W-G with wins of 3-2 and 4-3 but this time blew open their meeting with a 10-run third inning en route to the lopsided victory.
The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, with W-G countering with a run in their first at-bat, only to have DMC end the suspense with a big third inning.
Emma James limited the Hawks to just three hits while striking out six in collecting the win from the ring. She aided her own cause with a single, a home run and three RBIs, with battery-mate Olivia Rasmussen adding a home run, a base hit and four RBIs. Maddie Wagner had three hits for the Lions, with Beth Zimmer adding two hits.
Julia Evans is the lone senior on the W-G squad and finished 2-for-2 with a run scored in her final game for the Hawks. Dalany Bice had the other Hawk hit, which scored Evans.
Jordyn Achenbach lasted 2-2/3 innings in suffering the loss on the rubber. She allowed seven runs on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Bice came on in relief, throwing 2-1/3 innings in which she yielded frive runs on three hits and four walks while striking out one.
Errors haunted the Hawks in the loss, with only three of the DMC runs (all charged to Achenbach) earned while the other nine were unearned tallies.
W-G finishes the season 19-17 overall. They were 11-7 in West Central Conference play.
