The high school track and field season officially came to a close with one last meet and for several area boys’ track stars, that came in the Senior All-Star Spotlight Meet.
Held in Dubuque Iowa on Friday, June 9, the states of Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin came together to put the top track athletes in each state on the same track for one last meet.
Four area boys track stars participated in the meet including a pair from Dallas Center-Grimes in Jeff Spaur and Sean Madsen along with Perry’s own Reece Dunlap, and Waukee’s Zach Morrison.
Perry’s Reece Dunlap participated in a number of different events including the 200 and 400 meter dash events. Coming into Saturday’s events, Dunlap put up a season best 200 meter time of 23.51 seconds ranking him 214th in the state. Dunlap’s best 400 meter time coming into the meet was 51.54 seconds. On Saturday, the senior clocked in a 200 meter time of 22.84 seconds and placing 14th while finishing the 400 meter dash with an eight place time of 52.89 seconds.
For the Mustangs of Dallas Center-Grimes, their representation included seniors Jeff Spaur and Sean Madsen. Madsen took part in the 200 meter dash, the 4x100 meter relay, and the 4x200 meter relay. Madsen finished less than a second off from his season best time of 22.14 seconds in the 200 meter dash by clocking in with a mark of 22.84 seconds Saturday.
Madsen embarked upon a 4x100 meter relay race where he joined up with Class 4A 200 meter dash runner up Sam Tudor, Class 2A 100 meter champion Tanner Iske, and Rodney Schwartzhoff. The foursome finished second with a time of 43.12 seconds. Madsen and Tudor teamed up with Devin Sheridan and Dylan Kutch to place first overall with a time of 1:28.52 to score five points.
Jeff Spaur, the other DC-G track star took on the 110 meter hurdle event. Spaur clocked in a mere 14-tenths of a second off his season best time in the event after finishing with a time 15.78 seconds. That placed the Mustang senior in ninth place out of 11 participants in the event.
Finally, the lone Waukee representative was Drake Relays, and state meet qualifier Zach Morrison in the discuss event. Morrison was up against the likes of the Class 4A discuss state champion Jonathon Gannon among others. Morrison finished fourth at the state meet but didn’t quite hit his state meet mark, finishing with a mark of 167’-06”.
All four individuals helped Team Iowa place second overall with 73 points, preceded only by team Wisconsin with 96 points.
