The Perry Jayettes (2-10, 0-5) dropped their first game of the new year after the visiting Ballard Bombers (5-5, 4-1) outscored the home team by 14 for a final 38-24 Raccoon River Conference contest.
It was a tough outing for the Jayettes who found themselves down early when they fell behind by 10 points, 14-4 after one quarter.
The deficit grew another three points after the visiting team ran the tables with a 9-6 second quarter.
It was a closer ball game after the half with both offenses struggling to drain baskets as the visitors finished a point better at 6-5.
In the final eight minutes and down by 14 points the home played relentlessly. Their persistence and execution kept pace with their conference foe as the two teams finished the quarter tied at nine a piece.
Jayettes’ sophomore Molly Lutmer led the squad with 14 points after finishing at a 50 percent clip both from the floor, 1-for-2 and beyond the arc 4-for-8.
Teammate, junior Gabby West pulled down six of the team;s 17 boards- 13 defensive and four offensive. The squad finished shooting 8-for-29 from the field including 5-for-15 from 3-point land with five assists, seven steals and one block.
The Jayettes’ hope in winning their first RRC game this season will have to wait until Tuesday, Jan. 9, when conference leading Boone comes into town.
