The Woodward-Granger girls’ basketball team had their wings clipped this past Thursday night in a 41-34 defeat against the host Greene County Rams (4-7).
It was a close Jan. 4, contest from the beginning to the end of regulation with the Hawks (2-9, 0-7) successfully keeping pace.
In the first quarter both teams displayed some of their defensive prowess with the Hawks giving up nine points while scoring six.
The three-point deficit increased to four after the visitors were outscored by one, 10-9, in the second quarter.
After the half the two teams traded shots with the third quarter wrapping up tied at eight points a piece.
It was all Hawks in the final eight minutes where they not only played better offensively with 10 points but tied the game and sent it to overtime after holding the Rams to six points.
The Hawks’ fourth quarter momentum shifted back to the host who turned the tables in the extra period with an 8-1 run.
Thursday’s outing faired a lot better for the Hawks who were defeated by 16 points on Jan 2, against conference foe the Earlham Cardinals (7-2, 5-2).
From the start of the game at Earlham the Cardinals showed why they are the number three team in the West Central Activities Conference.
Offensively they opened up the first quarter with just nine points but kept the Hawks’ side of the scoreboard dimly lit with zero points.
The road team finally put up some offense in the second with six points but their nine point deficit grew to 14 after they gave up 11 points.
It was tighter second half with the third quarter belonging to the home team at 9-5.
The Hawks finally outdueled their host 11-9 in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough as Earlham defeated the Hawks 38-22.
Hawks’ senior Alyssa Bice led her squad in points with nine on a 4-for-12 shooting night including 1-for-2 from three.
Sophomore Katelyn Scharlau pulled down six of the team’s 34 boards. The Hawks’ finished with five assists, four steals and four blocks.
W-G is back home this Friday, Jan. 5th, for a WCAC showdown versus the Chargers of AC/GC.
