The winter swim season is underway and the Perry Area Swim Team were in Newton this past Saturday Dec. 2, for a 113 event.


In their first competitive event 11-year old PAWS’ Lilly Riley took the top spot with her time of 35.17 seconds in the 50 meter freestyle.


About 21 events later the PAWS team of 11-year olds which included Riley, Emily Dowd, Quin Mahler-Moreno and Zoe Hibbert took first place in the 200-meter relay with a time of 3:00.81.


It was another first place finish for Mahler-Moreno who won the top spot in the 100-meter breaststroke with her time of 1:42.04.


It was the boy’s turn to notch a first place victory when 14-year old Riese Archer swam a 36.04 in the 50-meter backstroke.


Both 15-year old Amanda Holwegner and Avery Miner came in first and second in the 100-meter freestyle event with Holwegner recording a 1:16.89 and Miner at 1:17.41.


Mahler-Moreno was back on top for the PAWS final first place victory. This time in the 50-meter breaststroke when she finished with a time of 46.73.


As a team they squad recorded 15 individual top five finishes - five in second place, four in third, four in fourth and two in fifth.


In team competition they earned four top four finishes - a second place, two third places, and one fourth.


One parent, Stacey Vaughn took to Facebook and posted her congratulations to five individuals who qualified for state.


“Twelve swimmers represented PAWS yesterday at Newton and we already have some state qualifiers,” Vaughn posted.”Congrats to Lilly Riley (50 free, 50 fly, 100 free), Abby Herman (50 free), Amanda Holwegner (50 free), Quin Mahler (100 IM, 100 breast, 50 breast) and Riese Archer (100 IM, 50 fly, 50 back).”
