The Woodward Granger Hawks added another win this season after fending off the neighboring Woodward Academy Knights in a close 66- 61 West Central Activities Conference victory.

In the win three Hawks’ starters and one reserve player contributed double-digit scores. Sophomore Keith Braunschweig led the squad with 20 points on a 7-for- 8 shooting night.

Fellow sophomores Bryce Achenbach, Kaya Bowlsby and Reese Jamison combined for 33 points.

Achenbach was 5-for-11 from the field and also led the team in assists with five. Bowlsby was 2-for-7 and pulled down seven rebounds - six defensively and one offensively. Jamison scored five times in his 10 attempts.

In the home win on Tuesday night the Hawks (4-1, 2-1) found themselves down early in the first quarter after the Knights (1-2,1-2) opened up the game on a 17- 10 run.

It got worse for the Hawks in the second quarter as the night extended their lead by 15 points after a 21-13 quarter.

W-G’s Head coach Brent Achenbach must have given his players some heady advice during half-time which the Hawks must’ve taken.

In the third quarter the Hawks cut their deficit by one point after dominating the Knight’s defensively where they allowed just six points while the offense scored 20.

It was a close final eight minutes with each team going back and forth until the home team finally created some much-needed separation and earned the victory with a 23-17 quarter.

The Comeback victory was no surprise for the head coach who has been seeing improvements all around.

“We’re a young squad and that’s part of the growing process,” the head coach said.

As a team the Hawks finished 23-of-51 from the field including 2-for-9 from beyond the arc, 18- for-23 from the line, with 26 rebounds - 19 defensive and seven offensive, with 12 assists,13 steals and four blocks.

Up next the Hawks travel to Van Meter this Friday, Dec. 8, to take on the Bulldogs in a WCAC bout.
