Perry’s wrestling team not only recorded a 2-1 record in their first dual outing this season but the Bluejays saw two of their wrestlers claim the top spot at this season’s Dan Hill Invitational.

On Sat. Dec. 2, the Bluejays headed to Harlan for a tournament against a slew of other competitors at Harlan H.S.

Two Bluejays’ seniors finished at top of their weight class. Zachary Thompson and Zach Stewart staved off a number of opponents for a first place medal.

Thompson, who wrestled in the 120-weight class , opened up the tournament with a first round bye before defeating Glewood’s Tyler Huey in the quarterfinals with a 17-2 technical fall (TF).

In the semifinal Thompson used 54 seconds in the second period to defeat Logan Magnolia’s Sidney Pitt with a 5-2 pinfall.

It was a tougher matchup for the senior in his championship run versus Bryce Hatten of Winterset. Both grapplers almost went the distance until the Bluejay successfully earned the 16-1 TF.

For the 138 pound Stewart the journey to first place took a little longer. After receiving a first round bye the senior won a 23-4 TF over Harlan’s Tyler Eaves 34 seconds into the second period.

Stewart and Winterset’s Kruise Kiburz grappled for three periods with the former earning a 7-2 decision.

It was another decision win for Stewart in the finals when he recorded a 5-1 victory over Gretna’s Tyler Cunningham.

Perry junior Kaleb Olejniczak finished second overall in the 126 pound class after falling to Gretna’s Van Schmidt in a close 3-2 decision.

Other notable finishers finishing in fifth place were Jered Narber (152) and Cole Snyder (170).

Two days before, the Bluejays were in Story City where they finished their night with an overall 2-1 record after defeating the host Norsemen 41-30, Kuemper Catholic 39-36 but falling to Gilbert 47-30.

Against the host the Bluejays tallied one pinfall victory, a TF and a decision. Narber had the pinfall win, Stewart earned a TF win and Cole Snyder (170) and Justin Stammer (145) each had a decision.

In their win versus Kuemper the Bluejays amassed four pinfall wins recorded by Olejniczak, Jacob Nelson (132), Stewart and Narber. Erick Funez (160) was responsible for the lone decision.

Perry plays host to Montezuma Community, Ogden, and Woodward-Granger this Tuesday.
