Perry’s girls’ basketball team dropped their first game of the young season in a lopsided 62-28 contest versus the host Newton Cardinals (1-2).
After opening up their season in dominating fashion over the DSM North Polar Bears last Friday, the Jayettes (1-1) struggled to put points on the board in their Nov. 21 road game.
Perry’s senior Johanna Diw led her squad with 11 points on a 4-for-13 night including 1-for-3 from beyond the arc. She pulled down eight rebounds and went 2-for-4 from the line.
Three other Jayettes’ accounted for the rest of the points. Sophomore Molly Lutmer scored eight, and seniors Isabel Saemisch and Grace Stewart scored six and three points.
The loss not only marked the Jayettes first this year but also gave the previous winless Cardinals their first victory this season.
Perry fell behind early on when they scored 10 points in what was their highest point total of the game, but allowed the host 17.
It got worse for the road team from there as the Cardinals added 13 points in the second while the Jayettes put up eight.
The final 16 minutes of action saw a Perry team combine for just 10 points (four in the third and six in the fourth) as the home team scored another 32 points.
As a team the Jayettes shot 20 percent from the floor, 28.5 percent from both beyond the arc and the stripe.
They tallied 27 rebounds - 16 defensive and 11 offensive (Saemisch - 9), three assists, and four steals (Stewart - 3).
