It may not count as a season win but the Woodward-Granger Hawks’ boys’ basketball team recorded a nail biting victory at this season’s Jamboree.

“We did some good things. We kept the turnovers down and took good shots,” W-G coach Brent Achenbach said. “Our defense improved in the 2nd quarter. We still need to work on our post defense and our 3-point and free throw percentage.”

At Saydel High School versus the host Colfax-Mingo TigerHawks, the Hawks came soaring back from five down to snatch a 29-27 win.

Junior Noah Hoyt led the Hawks’ squad with 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the floor and he connected on two of his three free throw attempts. He also added two rebounds.

The two half or quarter matchup saw the Hawks unable to score in the double digit range as they finished the first half with nine points while allowing 14.

It was a different story in the second with the Hawks erasing the deficit and closing out the game on a 20-13 run.

Both Bryce Achenbach, sophomore, and senior J.P. Nixon each finished with six points on a combined 5-for-8 shooting. Achenbach recorded a team high two assists.

Sophomore Keith Braunschweig accounted for three of W-G’s 12 boards, while Hoyt and Achenbach has two steals each of the team’s six total.

On Monday, Nov. 27, the Hawks head to Martensdale-St. Marys, for their first game of the 2017-2018 season.
