Woodward-Granger’s volleyball team closed the books on the 2017-2018 regular season with a 3-1 record at their own McCune Invitational.


On Saturday, Oct, 14, the Hawks (22-13) played host to several teams and remained undefeated until falling in three sets, 2-1,to Fort Dodge.


The Hawks opened up the tournament with a 2-0 set victory over the South Hardin Tigers with wins of 21-14 and 21-11.


W-G’s senior Julie Pitman finished with eight of the team’s 20 kills, while sophomore Emma Drake recorded 16 of the 18 assists and junior Anna Tague tallied five of the 16 digs.


As a team the Hawks finished with a serve efficiency of 88.6 percent with eight aces, three each from Tague and senior Katelyn Bandstra, and three blocks.


It was a tougher match versus the East Union Eagles who snatched a 21-18 second set win from the host but ultimately fell 21-18 and 15-3.


Drake was an assist machine with 25 of the the 27. Seniors Kaycee Major and Ashley Gales led the team in digs, Major with 17 of the 37 and kills and Gales with nine of the 27.


The squad finished 47-of-52 on serves for a 90.4 percent efficiency with four blocks and six aces, Drake and Tague with two a piece.


W-G’s final win of the afternoon came on a 2-0 sweep, 21-16 and 21-19, against the Grand View Christian Thunder.


Together the Hawks posted their highest serve efficiency of the tournament at 97.4 percent. They finished with 26 kills (Pitman - 8), 26 assists (Drake - 20), 34 digs (Major - 10) two blocks and two aces.


After defeating the Ogden Bulldogs on Tuesday in the first round of the Class 2A Region 3 postseason, they head to Neola on Monday, Oct. 23, for some second round action versus the Tri-Center Trojans (27-2).
