Woodward-Granger’s football team silenced their Class 1A District 5 rivals from Des Moines Christian with a convincing 35-0 road win.
In Des Moines last Friday, Sept. 29, the Hawks (4-2, 3-1) avenged their previous week’s loss with a dominating performance against the winless Lions (0-6).
It was all about the ground game for the Hawks who, led by senior running back Payton Tague’s 253 yards on 34 carries and three scores, churned out a team total 448 yards on 58 carries and four touchdowns.
Tague’s three touchdowns accounted for 22 of the team’s total points. Teammate, senior Austin Scharlau recorded the other rushing touchdown when he hit the endzone on a 60-yard run.
Scharlau finished the game with 146 yards on 16 attempts. Fellow senior Josh Saak tallied 15 yards on three carries and sophomore Bryce Achenbach carried the ball five times for 34 yards.
As the team’s starting quarterback, Achenbach led the aerial game finishing 2-of-7 for 12 yards that included an 11-yard strike to Saak.
The defensive unit collected a total 34.5 tackles including two solo tackles, one from Scharlau and the other from junior Gabriel Yingst.
The duo finished first and second in tackles as Scharlau recorded eight with five solo and six tackle assists and Yingst had 5.5 tackles with two solo and seven tackle assists.
Field goal kicker, sophomore Matt Hansen finished his night 1-for-2 o PATs and tow of six on touchbacks.
The Hawks look to make it two in a row this Friday when they host the Mount Ayr Raiders (2-4, 1-3).
