Perry’s football team were stampeded into a 42-7 loss by the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs in another Class 3A District 2 match.

At the Dewey Field on Saturday night Sept. 22, the Bluejays (1-4, 0-3) failed to lasso the Mustangs’ (5-0, 3-0) offensive attack.

The Bluejays’ defense was torched for 479 total yards - 113 passing and 366 running - and five touchdowns while the offense mustered 40 yards through the air and a minus 22 yards on 17 carries.

Perry’s quarterback, senior Alexis Garrido, accounted for all 40 yards on a 7-for-20 night.

Garrido connected with three different Bluejays seniors and one junior. Reece Dunlap, Brandon Kenyon and Donald Chavez if hauled in two receptions with Dunlap leading the core with 14 yards. Kenyon had 12, Chavez seven, and Kaleb Olejniczak caught the other pass for seven.

Chavez led the carousel of runners, five total, in carries with eight for six yards while Dunlap was three for -14, Garrido four for -5, Olejniczak one for -9 and junior Justin Stammer carried once for zero yards.

On the defensive front, sophomore Evan Tobar recorded the Bluejays’ only score of the night when he hit paydirt on a 43 yard pick six. Teammate German Alvaranga was 1-for-1 on PATs.

It was the only time of the night the home crowd saw a Perry score as they witnessed DC-G’s quarterback Damon Clapper complete 10 passes for 113 yards including a 42 yard touchdown strike to Thomas Erickson.

The Mustangs’ 366 rushing yards came mostly from sophomore Luke Fistler (10 carries for 176 and two scores) and senior Tanner Epple (11 carries for 107 and two scores).

It will be a pair of one win teams on the field this Friday night when the Bluejays travel to Gilbert for a meeting with the Bulldogs.
