The Perry Bluejays and Jayettes’ cross country team recorded a 10th and ninth place finish at the 41st Cardinal Cross Country Invite hosted by Newton H.S.


On Tuesday at the Westwood Golf Course in Newton, the Jayettes overall score of 274 placed them four points above 10th place finishers Ankeny and 62 points better than East.


The Bluejays score of 285 landed them in the final spot a full 39 points behind ninth place host Cardinals and 109 points fewer than eighth place East.


For the Jayettes senior Grace Stewart was leading the charge with a time of 23.34 for 31st. Sophomore Hannah Peterson finished 57th and senior Julissa Calderon was 60th.


Eli Noble, Bluejays’ senior, was the first one to cross at 46th with a time of 20:17. Junior Eduardo Sanchez, placed 56th and in 60th was senior Zach Stewart.


Overall the Roosevelt girls placed first with 41 points, Southeast Polk was second with 51, and Grinnell came in third with 74 points.


In fourth was Pella’s 82 points, Newton was fifth with 156, sixth went to Oskaloosa’s 158, Marshalltown was seventh with 88, and Nevada finished eighth with 214


The Dallas Center-Grimes boys took first place with 33 points followed by Grinnell’s 66, and Oskaloosa’s 94.


Nevada’s 107 landed them fourth, in fifth was Ankeny with 150, sixth was Pella with 160 and Marshalltown finished eighth with 166 points.

Both teams are off from any competitive events until Sept. 28, when they host the Leon Fox Invitational meet at the Perry Golf and Country Club.
