Perry High School’s volleyball team finished with one win in three matches after hosting a number of teams at their own invitational.

On Thursday, Sept. 7, the Jayettes (3-14) were unable to earn the deciding third games in two of their three contests against the Ogden Bulldogs (5-5) and the Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders (4-5).

The team’s lone win came against the Panorama Panthers (2-7) who took the first set but the Jayettes’ answered back with back to back set wins.

After dropping the first set 21-16 the Jayettes fought back to win by four points,21-17 in set two and took the decisive third match 15-11.

Perry senior Johanna Diw continued to lead her squad in kills with 16 on 30 kill attempts. She was 7-for-11 on serves with an ace, four digs and two assists.

Fellow seniors Sidney Vancil and Sydney Guerra combined for 30 of the 48 total digs - Guerra 16, and Vancil 14. Vancil also finished with19 of the team’s 24 total assists.

In their Crusader’s match the Jayettes dropped the first set 21-16, bounced back with a 22-20 win but eventually fell 15-11.

It was almost the same conclusion against the Bulldogs who lost to the host 21-17 and then delivered two straight blows of 22-20 and 15-7.

Despite the multiple losses, the Jayettes seemed to be playing better as they managed to capture set wins in both matches, something they’ve only accomplished once so far this season.

“We definitely have been making some improvements over the last couple of days and there were some positives to take away from the tournament,” Perry head coach John Fulton said. “We made too many mistakes and some of those games could’ve gone the other way had we cleaned up some of our own game.”

The Jayettes hit the road this coming Tuesday, Sept. 12 when they travel to Huxley for a showdown against RRC foe the Bombers.
