Woodward-Granger’s volleyball team overcame a close first set 26-24 defeat to take the next three sets against the Earlham Cardinals.

What hasn’t been the norm for the Hawks (9-4, 2-0) the last three years surprisingly made its appearance Tuesday night when the host Cardinals (6-5, 0-3) took the first set of what normally is a three game series for the visitors.

The first set loss didn’t seem to concern the 2016 WCAC champs who bounced back against their conference opponents with wins of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-14.

Besides the first set loss the Hawks defensive strategy kept the Cardinals to just eight aces, and 21 kills in 78 attempts for a 7.7 percent kill eff.

The Hawks now have three days to work out any kinks that might hinder their chances at a tournament win at the North Scott Invitational when they take an almost a three hour journey to Eldridge, Iowa.

Game and individual stats were not available at press time.
