Perry’s boys cross country team opened up their season with an overall 11th place finish at this year’s Gilbert Cross Country Invite.
A total of 13 high school teams met at the Iowa State University Cross Country course for a chance at a first place finish in the first meet on Thursday, August 24.
The Host Gilbert Tigers took first place with a time of 18:48:23. DC-G came in second at 18:48.28 and in third was Nevada with a time of 18:48:36.
Sixteen Bluejays took to the field against another 246 competitors. Only seven Perry runners earned a place finish while combining for 324 team points with a time of 18:51:47.
Senior Zach Thompson led the squad with a time of 18:50:49 for 44th. Elijah Noble came in 66th less than a second behind Thomson at 18:51:40. Two hundredths of a second later in 67th was Eduardo Sanchez.
Zach Stewart finished 73, Mario Cruz finished a step behind in 74th, with Aaron Lockwood placing 80th and Ben Stika at 82nd.
Overall in fourth place was Bondurant-Farrar, fifth was Kuemper Catholic, sixth Newton H.S., seventh Saydel, eighth North Polk, ninth Boone and in 10th was Hoover H.S., Des Moines North placed 12th with Greene County taking the final spot at 13th.
