Perry’s softball team advanced to the Class 4A Region 3 regional championship round after a 4-3 victory versus the Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks (1-1).

On Saturday at Perry, the Jayettes (1-0) finished off the Go-Hawks, who played as the home team, in dramatic fashion in the last inning.

It was a complete pitching duel for five plus scoreless innings with both starting pitchers keeping their opposition at bay.

Emma Olejniczak, Jayettes’ starting pitcher, tossed the complete game extra-inning affair. She allowed three runs (2 earned) off five hits, a walk, and 13 strikeouts.

She was an integral part of the team’s scoring as she led the squad with a 2-for-4 performance with two RBIs.

After keeping the home team to zero runs the Go-Hawks finally broke through with a run in the bottom of the sixth to take the first lead of the game.

It was desperation time for the Jayettes, in the top of the seventh who were staring at their final out and possibly their final inning of their season.

Changing that trained out thought was Perry’s Adriana Eastman who belted a line drive to right that missed the diving outfielders glove.

With the ball rolling toward the fence, Eastman rounded first base then second and made her way home after the throw to second base was bobbled, which knotted the game at one.

Olejniczak and the defense didn’t allow a run in the bottom of the seventh as the two squads headed into extra frames.

In the eighth, Jayette Johanna Diw made it to first after she was hit by a pitch. Later on she stole second and advanced to third after tagging on an infield fly ball.

After Perry’s Alyssa Kruger drew a walk, teammate Rachel Kinney’s single allowed Diw to score.

With two runners on Olejniczak delivered the eventual game winning hit when she connected for a 2-RBI shallow fly ball to left.

The Go-Hawks would not go quietly into the night when their pitcher belted a two run homer that closed the gap by one run. It would be the last run of the night as Kruger caught the last out.

Up next the Jayettes travel to Carlisle on Tuesday, July 11, to face the Wildcats in the Regional finals and a chance to make it back to back appearances at state.
