It was a great final Saturday afternoon for the Bluejays’ track team, whose 4x400 meter relay team sprinted toward a fourth place finish at the state tournament.
Perry’s 4x400 meter relay team of Reece Dunlap, Alexis Garrido, Brandon Kenyon and Adan Medina recorded a final run of 3:23.87 breaking their personal best they had just set the day before.
On Friday at Drake University, the team earned a spot in Class 3A finals when they ran to a third place finish with a time of 3:24.63.
“It was a fun race to watch,” said Ben Coy, Bluejays coach. “The boys were very happy after the race. It can be a long weekend and with the 4x400 finals being the last race of the entire meet, sometimes you will see guys not run their best. They went out and ran well and broke their school record again. I know they wanted to place in the top three, but you can’t be upset with running a school record time and medaling.”
This was a positive way to end the tournament which could’ve ended sour for the Bluejays whose 800-distance team were unable to compete.
Dunlap, Medina, Kenyon and Manassess Martinez were all set to take their marks in the preliminaries, until a false start disqualified the team.
The mishap didn’t prevent Kenyon from giving it all he had in his final Saturday event when he ran a personal record of 2:01.98 for an overall 13th place finish.
The day before the Jayettes distance team of Rachel Kinney, Breanna Penenger, Haley Vaughn, and Sidney Vancil finished 23rd with a time of 4:32.43.
