A usually routine 9-hole round of golf turned into a nail biting scenario when the Perry Jayettes squared off against the visiting Carroll Tigers.
On Monday at the Perry Golf Club, 12-players swung for the green and in the end it was the Tigers foursome who squeaked by with a close 192 to Perry’s 194 score.
Joel Happel, Perry’s head coach, was hoping for the win but was jubilant with how the game played out and how his leaders performed.
“Great night and great scores,” he said. “Good battle between the top players from each school.”
For the home team Brooke Huntington led the squad with a round of 46. She finished with a birdie, a par, and multiple bogeys.
The Jayette trio of Delaney Eiteman, Alyssa Kruger and Skylar Cunningham rounded out the final scores.
Eiteman recorded a 48, Kruger a 49, and Cunningham has a 51. Sarah Sweet (56) and Madyson Hill (71) also participated.
“Eiteman came in with by far her low round of her career,” Happel said.
Two days prior on April 15, the Jayettes were putting their best club forward at this season’s Invitational at Winterset.
Seven teams partook at the event with the Jayettes’ round of 414 earning them fourth place just two points behind third place Dallas Center-Grimes’ 412.
The Creston Panthers placed first with a 408, and the Chariton Chargers finished second with a 409. In fifth place was the Norwalk Warriors with a 436 followed by the host Winterset Huskies’ 458 and the Van Meter Bulldogs with a 467.
“Brooke Huntington and Alyssa Kruger continued to play well,” Happel said. “We finished fourth but only six strokes separated us from first place.”
Individually Huntington finished second with a round of 90. Kruger shot a 92 while Cunningham had a 111 and Eiteman a 121.
The team travels to Gilbert this Friday for a match against the host Tigers and the Nevada Cubs.
