At their first tournament of the season the Perry Jayettes (4-1) managed to save themselves from a possible 0-2 contest record with a bounce back 1-0 win.
This past Saturday the Jayettes traveled to Newton High School where they dropped a close 1-0 match against the Des Moines Abraham Lincoln Railsplitters (1-1), but garnished a 1-0 win versus the PCM Monroe Mustangs.
For 60 minutes Jayette goalie Janet Ortiz, junior, led the team’s defensive efforts. Four times Ortiz denied the Mustangs a chance to score while the rest of the squad made sure to keep the opposition from attempting anymore shots.
Sydney Guerra, junior, recorded the Jayettes lone goal off an assist by senior Mariah McNamara. Guerra finished with two points and McNamara had one.
The team didn’t fare as well against the Railsplitters who spoiled the Jayettes chances at a win edging them out 1-0.
Ortiz had a solid outing in front of the net with two saves but gave up just the one goal in her 25 minutes of work.
Sharing Perry’s goaltending duties was junior Salena Garcia. In 35 minutes Garcia didn’t allow a goal and tallied eight saves.
The team looks to score another win on Tuesday when they play host against the Bondurant-Farrar Bluejays.
