It was a fifth place finish for the Woodward-Granger Hawks boys’ track and field team at the Carroll Co-Ed Invitational.
On Monday, the Hawks combined for 83 points that put team 15 points ahead of the sixth place Greene County Rams.
The host Carroll Tigers and IKM-Manning Wolves finished tied for first with 126 points each. The Perry Bluejays and Maple Valley A-O H.S. each earned 89 points for a third place tie.
Bryce Achenbach of W-G got things started off with a second place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.29 seconds. He later placed second in the long jump with a recorded 18-01.50 jump.
Both Hawks Jack Grell and Alex Bice finished second and third in the 1600-meter run. Grell’s time was 5:16.93 while Bice’s time was 5:20.96.
Payton Tague followed with third place honors in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.52. In the discuss throw, Brendan Bird captured first place with a throw of 137-00.
As a team the Hawks combined for three top three finishes in the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 runs.
In the 4x100, Jan Dorenkamp, Bird, Josh Saak and Tague ran themselves to a third place finish with a time of 48.34 seconds.
Achenbach, Grell, Ian Thompson and Marcus McConahay recorded another third place finish with a run of 9:05.77.
The final third place finish went to the 4x400 team of Achenbach, Saak, Thompson and Cale Pritchett, who together ran a 3:48.42.
It was a better finish for the Hawks on April 6, when the team recorded 133 points for third place at their own Cavanaugh Relays.
First place went to the Des Moines Christian Lions with 151 points. The Southeast Valley Jaguars placed second with 142.5 points. The Perry Bluejays finished fourth with 130.
Achenbach claimed another first place finish in the long jump with a recorded 19-02.00 jump. Teammate Alex Kirton’s shot put throw of 37-00.05 landed him in first place.
The 4x110 shuttle relay team of J.P. Nixon, Thompson, Tague, and Nick Moser ran to first place with a time of 1:10.99.
